Swimming pool equipment system with a large filter tank, pump, connected pipes, valves, and chemical containers inside an outdoor equipment enclosure.

Warning Signs Your Pool Equipment Needs Repair

No amount of cleaning will clear up the cloudiness in your pool? You have noticed odd sounds emanating from the pump? Or perhaps your energy bills have been on the rise for no apparent cause. In all likelihood, your pool equipment has something to say about it.

We at Pool Service Unlimited are well acquainted with such matters. Since 2005 we have put our home base in Naples to work for homeowners in Collier and Lee Counties, and anywhere from Marco Island and Bonita Springs to Estero, South Fort Myers, Pelican Bay and Lely Resort. Should you have any doubts as to the state of your equipment, give us a ring at (239) 306-6630 and one of our in-house repairmen will make an inspection.

For the most part pool equipment does not just quit; it puts out clues. Heed them and you can stave off the expense of what would otherwise be a major problem. The following are some of the signs you should be on the lookout for.

Unusual Noises From the Pump

A pool pump is meant to have a low and steady hum. But if that sound becomes harsh or more pronounced, take note. Grinding, screeching and the like are indicative of debris in the way, a motor on its last legs or bearings that are worn out.

Some of the noises that are trouble makers include:

  • A squeal of high pitch that only intensifies
  • A growl or grinding noise meaning the motor is under duress
  • Rattling from within the housing of loose parts or debris
  • Humming but no start from the pump
  • Vibration felt on the equipment pad

One can be left with little choice but to replace the whole motor if these are put off. An early detection affords you better options.

Water That Refuses to Stay Clear

There is nothing like having to deal with cloudy or green water when you are on top of the cleaning. While there is the chemistry to consider, at times the equipment is to blame. Add what you will to the water, it will still look dull if the filter is clogged or damaged and the pump is not doing its job of circulation.

When your best efforts are not enough, look to the filtration system. We will find the issue before it gets away from us; our 10-Step process calls for a chemical balance and an equipment check on each visit.

Leaks on the Equipment Pad

You do not want to see water around your heater, pump or filter. Worn gaskets, a cracked fitting or a connection that has come loose are sources of minor leaks. But they will not stay minor and can result in damage to the motor if you let them be.

Be alert for:

  • Puddles in the vicinity of the pad that are persistent
  • Fittings and valves that are damp or corroded
  • Water level dropping faster than evaporation would account for
  • Rust or minerals near the seals
  • Bubbles in the return jets

Poor Circulation

Your pool needs good circulation to be in good health. Slow or uneven water flow means the chemicals will not disperse and algae will make itself at home. A skimmer that is hard put to pull water or feeble return jets are a sign the pump or filter is flagging.

In many cases it is a matter of a clogged filter or a valve, or a pump coming to the end of its run. A quick inspection will set you straight.

An Increase in Your Electric Bill

The same task requires more of an aging pump and the bill reflects it. If your usage is up and you have not altered your routine, the equipment is probably why. When the occasion arises we can put you in touch with some more efficient new models to lower the cost.

The Importance of Timing

Equipment sees its share of use here in Southwest Florida where pools are in operation all year. Tending to a warning sign promptly is the best way to preclude an expensive breakdown in the height of swimming season.

Our technicians at Pool Service Unlimited are employees who have been background checked, not subcontractors; the team is made up of a Certified Pool/Spa Operator and Contractor among others. There are no long-term contracts with us and we do the repairs in house so there is no waiting on someone else. We also provide free estimates.

Do not put off calling us if you recognise any of the above. Reach Pool Service Unlimited at (239) 306-6630 between 8:00am and 4:00pm on weekdays and we will have your pool running as it ought to.
